O is for... Old Fashioned

Traditionally, the first use of the name ‘Old Fashioned’ for a bourbon whiskey cocktail was said to have been at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. The recipe was said to have been invented by a bartender at that club in honor of Colonel James E. Pepper, a prominent bourbon distiller, who brought the cocktail to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City.

Old Fashioned

Ingredients

2 parts bourbon

2 dashes Angostura bitters

1 part water

1 tsp sugar

1 orange wedge

Method

Mix the sugar, water and bitters in an Old Fashioned glass.

Add the orange wedge, and muddle with a barspoon.

Add the bourbon and a handful of ice cubes and stir before serving.
